The 2003 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Shirin Ebadi, may be taking up the cause of Canadian photojournalist Zahra Kazemi who died in Iranian custody earlier this year. Stephan Hachemi, Kazemi's son, said the family has given Ebadi permission to take up its legal battle in Iran. Kazemi was arrested while taking photographs outside a Tehran prison during student-led protests.

Hachemi, who lives in Montreal, said Ebadi will represent the family at the trial of the intelligence agent accused in the beating death. Mohammad Reza Aghdam Ahmadi has pleaded not guilty to murder charges. Ebadi made headline this week when she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work fighting for democracy and the rights of women and children.
